Motorists are being warned of icy conditions on the Desert Road as police implore motorists to drive carefully.
Overnight snow and rain is turning to ice as the cloud cover lifts and temperatures drop, say police.
Officers are asking motorists to significantly lower their speeds, especially in the vicinity of the Three Sisters.
A MetService spokesperson says snow flurries were predicted earlier this week along with southerlies for Tauranga for much of the week.
MetService meteorologist Dan Corbett says the Bay of Plenty’s eastern coast is also likely to experience very large waves this week.
“Sweeping waves on exposed eastern coasts will bring the risk of coastal erosion and a risk to people on beaches.”
