NZTA is warning motorists of delays on State Highway 2 between the Wairoa Bridge and Carmichael Road in Bethlehem when resurfacing starts there at the weekend.
It begins on Sunday with the work to be carried out at night.
Work is estimated to take five nights, but it could stretch out to two weeks if there is rain.
New Zealand Transport Agency's Bay of Plenty state highway manager Rod James says reduced speed limits through the area during the day may impact travel times.
"The highway surface is due for replacement. We're taking the opportunity to replace the surface with one that is quieter and has a higher skid resistance. The result will be a safer and superior road."
