Thunder on the horizon

If the sound of more than 600 motorcycle engines rumbling is music to your ears then this weekend will be a mechanical symphony.

Returning to the Coromandel for its sixth year is Thunder Beach 2014 – the country’s largest and friendliest three day summer motorcycle rally.

As part of the festival Thunder Beach takes riders along the Coromandel Loop which is rated in the top 10 motorcycle rides in the world.

Thunder Beach event organiser Troy Hardy says registrations to date have more than doubled the 300 or so they received in 2013.

This will be the second year Thunder Beach has run over three days and if Troy gets his wish future festivals could be stretched out over a week.

“Everyone who takes part in Thunder Beach absolutely loves Thunder Beach and they come back for more.

“It’s a safe, family environment and we’ve never had any drama or hassles, it just a good three days of fun, riding and entertainment.”

Thunder Beach kick starts on Friday morning with a Hog Breakfast at Road and Sport Harley Davidson on Te Rapa Rd in Hamilton.

The convoy will then ride over to Whangamata and later that evening the Triumph Kick Start Party will be held down at the Whangamata Club on Port Rd.

On Saturday morning the bikers then descend on Whitianga, “the home of Thunder Beach,” says Troy.

“We park all the bikes up on Albert St in the township centre for the Miracle Mile which is a free event.

“There will be food stalls, farmers markets, the Metzler Show and Shine, and so much more.

A trade village will also displaying the brand new Indian Scout plus Harley Davidson 2015 demo bikes straight from America.

From 5.30pm the Thunder Beach Party will keep the Coroglen Tavern rocking, with a massive prize giving and live rock music from Auckland band Overdrive.

There will be free shuttle busses for people registered for the festival and will run from 5.30pm until 11.30pm.

Thunder Beach then wraps up on Sunday morning for a parade through Whitianga, says Troy.

“We’ll do a couple of circuits of the township and then do the back part of the Coromandel Loop as we head to Kopu via the Thames Coast line.”

Troy says people can register on the day but to avoid disappointment they should jump on the website and register as soon as they can.

There are four different types of registrations – ranging from free to $80 – with each gaining you access to either all or certain events during the festival.

“There will be all sorts of bikes; vintage, classic, sports, customs, cruisers, everything that has two wheels.

“At Thunder Beach we don’t care what you ride as long as you love to ride.”

The Thunder Beach 2014 Festival starts this Friday, November 28 and runs until Sunday, November 30.
