UPDATED: SH27 closed near Kaihere

UPDATED – 12.35pm: The driver of a truck which rolled on State Highway 27 near Kaihere this morning has been airlifted to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition.

The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter says the driver was trapped inside his truck and was cut free from the wreckage by firefighters following the crash, which happened at about 9.20am.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash which occurred just north of Kaihere School.

The truck had been transporting two large concrete slabs which were to be used as the walls of industrial buildings.

Both lanes of SH27 had been blocked and will be closed for sometime as police wait for a crane to arrive and move the slabs.

Diversions are in place on SH27 at Kaihere Rd for northbound traffic and at Torehape Rd East for southbound traffic.

Coromandel motorists travelling to or from the Waikato are being warned of potential delays on State Highway 27 today.

The road has been blocked and subsequently closed following a truck rolling over on SH27 near Kaihere this morning, at about 9.20am.

Diversions are in place and Waikato Police anticipate it will take some time to clear the scene.

They ask motorists travelling through or near Kaihere to allow for extra time and plan to avoid the area if and where possible.
