State Highway 29 reopens

State Highway 29 over the Kaimai Ranges has reopened, after it was closed at about 10pm last night, June 19, due to heavy ice build up.

Police are still warning motorists intending to travel on State Highway 29 to take extreme caution. There have also been reports of ice on Pyes Pa Road, State Highway 36.
Head of the Western Bay strategic traffic unit Ian Campion says motorists need to be aware of the ice indicators.
“It’s really important to look out for those indicators.  Ice is usually visible and the environment usually gives indicators like frost on the side of the road or paddocks.”
He says if motorists detect ice they should slow down to a speed that enables the driver to have total control over the vehicle.
“If you break too hard then you lose control.  If you hit a patch of ice at speed then it significantly increases the risk an accident,” says Ian.
