A second person has died after a serious crash yesterday on State Highway 2, south of Tauranga.

Police confirmed the second person died of their injuries last night. But were not releasing the names of the two who died in the crash.

Emergency services were called to the crash just before 8am yesterday morning, about 3km northeast of Pongakawa on SH2.

One person died at the scene and the 16-year-old male driver of the car was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition. Another passenger was taken to Tauranga Hospital but wasn’t in a serious condition at the time.

The crash happen on a straight bit of road about 3km northeast of Pongakawa and about 4km northwest of Ohinepanea. The Serious Crash Unit are investigation the cause of the crash.
