Two car collision on SH2

UPDATED: Two people are trapped in their vehicle following a two car collision near Whakamarama this afternoon, says Northern Fire Communications shift manager Carren Larking.

One person has suffered serious injuries while another sustained moderate injuries following the head-on collision near the intersection of Gill Road and State Highway 2 which occurred shortly after 3.15pm.


Traffic backed up following the two car crash on SH2.

Carren says fire crews are now currently working to cut the trapped people from their vehicle. 

A police spokesperson says both lanes of SH2 are currently blocked and a diversion via Munro and Te Puna Quarry roads is currently in place. Police ask motorists for patience as delays are expected.

Motorists are also being asked to avoid SH2 and either take an alternate route via Hamilton or delay their travel if possible.

Two cars have have collided on State Highway 2 near Whakamarama this afternoon.

A caller to the 0800 SUNLIVE number says the head-on collision occurred near the intersection of Gill Lane and SH2 just after 3.15pm.

At this stage it is unknown how many people are involved or if there have been any injuries.
