Last week’s announcement by Transport Minister Steven Joyce that the give way rules will change in 2012 have met with motoring industry approval.
The Automobile Association endorses the decision to give right of way to left-turning traffic and driver instructors say it will improve road safety.
But did the give way rule need to change?
SunLive visited the Gate Pa shopping centre to find out if people there knew the current give way rule and if they thought changing it was a good idea.
You have got to give way to either the car that is on the main road or the one that is turning right. Bad idea, it is confusing. John van Bommel, Tauranga
Give way to your left. No, I have been driving for 20 years and it would be too hard to remember. Kelly Collingwood, Tauranga
Give way to the right. Yes. Bob Wright, Welcome Bay
Well I think, if you get hit in the driver’s door then you are in the wrong. So you give way to all right turning traffic. I didn’t think that there was a problem with it, it is just about educating people. Shane Ladkin, Te Puna
Give way to everything on the right. Definitely a good idea, I still can see people hesitating and it just makes no sense. Brenda Fowke, NSW, Australia
Give way to everything on your right. Good idea, because half the people don’t follow it anyway. Awhina Hona, Tauranga
