Young windsurfers made their presence felt for the first time at the Tauranga Yacht and Power Boat Club annual prizegiving at the weekend.
The top award for the centreboard division ‘Young Legends Trophy’, went to Sven Pedersen, who sails an RS:X windsurfer.

Sven, 17, won both the national championships and the Sail Auckland regatta, qualifying for the NZ Youth Sailing Team, which goes to the World Youth Sailing Champs in Croatia in July.
The centreboard division includes small sailing dinghies like Optimists and sailboards like Technos, through to two-handed skiffs such as Javelins.
Techno and RS:X boards sailed in the Tauranga summer series for the first time in the 2010-11 season. Two new trophies were donated by Elements Watersports. The Elements trophy for first Techno went to Alex Hart, who is going to San Francisco for the Techno Worlds. The Elements trophy for first RS:X went to Bradley Nixon.
Tauranga Boys’ College won the Steve’s Marine Supplies Bay of Plenty Secondary Schools Teams Racing trophy.
Other notable winners are Trent Rippey, Isaac McHardie, Gen Saunders and Josh McConnell, with Simon Fraser-McKenzie taking out the celebrated Capsize Cup for most spills.
Racing resumes on Sunday, May 29 with the winter series, which runs fortnightly through to late August.
