Good progress with blasting in the Waioeka Gorge means the section of State Highway 2 will only close once today at 1pm.
Blasting on the upper edges of the slope towards Opotiki combined with heavy rain on Monday night helped to dislodge about 5000 cubic metres of slip material reports NZTA.
The agency says intermittent closures were expected from Tuesday through to today for one hour, however the road will now only be closed for 30 minutes today to complete the blasting phase.
Acting Bay of Plenty state highways manager Andrew Scott says heavy rain on Monday night brought down a lot of slip material.
“We think approximately 2000 cubic metres - the blasting yesterday dislodged another 3000 cubic metres, which did not come down on mass, but has gradually come down over the last 24 hours.”
The road remained open on Wednesday as no blasting works were carried out.
The road is expected to be closed for around 30 minutes at 1pm and motorists are advised to plan their travel around the work as delays are expected.
