Tauranga builder Rodney Wood is describing his victory at the New Zealand Sprint Car Championship as “sweet”.
An amateur racer, it was a big effort for him to beat the favoured American drivers, who are professionals.
“It was a very sweet victory because they were professional drivers from the US and they drive full-time for a living and go to 80 to 100 race meetings a year and they were beaten by myself – and I’m just a local builder who races once a week during summer,” says Rodney.
Rodney is now setting his sights on the North Island Sprint Car Championship at Baypark on March 13.
He believes some of the top sprint car racing drivers from the US, who he beat in Cromwell to take the national title, could be at the North Island champs.
