Crash on Mount flyover

UPDATED 11AM: The flyover in Mount Maunganui has been re-opened to traffic after a three car crash this morning.

Emergency services were called to the Hewletts Road flyover about 9.40am with reports one person was trapped in a vehicle following the crash.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says police have closed the flyover in both directions while the crash is being dealt with.

Traffic is instead being diverted to the Golf Road and Maunganui Road intersection and motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible.

He understands the one person that was initially trapped has been freed by firefighters and being tended to be St John paramedics.

A child is also understood to have recieved minor injuries.

A caller into SunLive says she can see two fire appliances and Ambulances on scene.

She says BP Service Station staff, on Maunganui Rd, heard the crash and traffic is now backing up considerably toward the Bayfair Shopping Centre.
