The restrictions in the Mangorewa Gorge between Tauranga and Rotorua were lifted today.
Motorists were restricted to travelling through the gorge between 4pm and 9am since it fully reopened on September 28.
From today, motorists are able to travel through the gorge 24 hours a day.
The road through the Mangorewa Gorge is unsealed and traffic is restricted to one lane at the bottom.
The full opening of SH36 today will mark the end of five months of restrictions in the Mangorewa Gorge.
New Zealand Transport Agency’s Bay of Plenty State Highway Manager Rod James says the road conditions through the highway have now improved enough to let heavy vehicles through.
The road is still unsealed through the work site and traffic is reduced to one lane.
The Mangorewa Gorge improvement project is on schedule for completion in February 2010.
