Pipe pulled from The Strand

Workers hope to complete the removal of an aging ceramic sewage pipe in central Tauranga today.
The pipe is thought to be about 80 years old and is being replaced for 24 metres underground outside Starbucks on The Strand.

Contractors pulling an old sewage pipe up on The Strand today in downtown Tauranga.

Contractors had been working on its removal since Sunday morning, June 14. The reason for its removal was sewage found leaking from the pipe recently after it fractured, causing contractors to use a hydraulic jack to burst the pipe so it could be removed.
Those working on the sewage pipe also replaced aging underground pipes on Hamilton Street last year and say they have replaced up to 60 metres of piping in the past.
