Tauranga 17 year old driver sensation Richie Stanaway continues to impress in world motorsport with a podium finish in the German Formel Master series at the Oschersleben circuit at the weekend.
On a damp and cold track in the first race, Richie launched his Team Ma-Com single seater at the start with great prowess and leapt from seventh on the grid to a remarkable third at the first corner before moving through to second soon afterwards.
Richie Stanaway saw Team Ma-Com through to a podium finish in Europe at the weekend.
Richie's team mate Adrian Camperfield started from pole and made an excellent start to be about five car lengths ahead of the next car by turn one – a position he did not relinquish for the rest of the race.
From there it was a procession lead by Team Ma-Com. Either Adrian or Richie were fastest on every lap and by the end Adrian was six seconds ahead of Richie who was a further 20 seconds ahead of the third placed car.
Overnight the organisers made the decision to demote a number of drivers for disrespecting the yellow flag in qualifying – forcing drivers to rely on their second best qualifying time. Richie was among those penalised and finally started the second race from fifth position.
Unfortunately for Richie, who wanted more wet conditions, the track was dry and cold and offered low grip on the slick tyres. Even so, he had another excellent start and was third into the first corner. Over the next three laps he challenged strongly for second but when he attempted the pass the other driver moved over and made contact. This caused Richie to spin. He quickly recovered and was able to rejoin the race in eighth position, but showing true fighting spirit, he fought his way past three cars and to fifth place at the flag.
Team Ma-Com was delighted to finish third in the championship and team owner Marian Hamprecht was very complimentary of Richie’s efforts; he re-stated his determination to put together a deal for Richie to undertake a full season in Europe.
