UPDATED: SH25 near Whitianga reopened

UPDATED: The NZ Transport Authority says the two sections of State Highway 25 north and south of Whitianga closed this morning have now been fully reopened.

The NZTA is still urging people to take care while travelling through both areas and would like to thank motorists for their patience.

EARLIER:

The NZ Transport Authority says both lanes of State Highway 25 near Leah Road just north of Whitianga are now open.

To the south of Whitianga, one lane of SH25 near Wade Road has also been opened, with traffic management currently in place.

Whitianga was cut off for period after localised flooding, caused by heavy rains, closed sections of SH25 to the north and south of the town this morning.

While traffic is moving, the NZTA is asking people to take care when travelling through both areas and thanks motorists for their patience.

Motorists face potential delays after flooding closed two sections of State Highway 25 near Whitianga this morning.

Localised flooding caused by heavy rains overnight has closed a section of SH25 near Leah Road north of Whitianga, along with a section near Wade Road south of Whitianga.

The Thames-Coromandel District Council says access is now available north from Simpsons Beach but the bridge south of Whitianga is still under water.

The council has also received an unconfirmed reports of a slip at Kuaotunu Hill and other sections of SH25 being flooded.

TCDC and NZ Transport Authority contractors are currently checking the roads around the district and will provide an update as soon as more information is available.

This morning the MetService recorded rainfall of 37.8mm to 45.6mm in the Whitianga area between 6am to 8am.

A severe weather watch is also currently in place on the Coromandel, with a slow-moving trough over the peninsula expected to bring bursts of heavy rain to the region this morning and tonight.
