Sign language

Road signs labelling 15th Avenue as State Highway 2A are not a mistake – they are a sign of things to come, says Tauranga City Council transport operations manager Martin Parkes.

Confused by road signage? Tauranga road signs are changing, in preparation for the second harbour bridge.

“It’s going to be 2A once the harbour link opens. We had to make some changes to allow for the signs from the old State Highway in Waihi Road,” says Martin.
“It is a little bit premature but we took the opportunity because we were changing other signs at the same time.”
Under the new system with the second harbour bridge, State Highway 2 will be Hewletts Road, the harbour bridge, and Takitimu Drive through the Bethlehem.
State Highway 2A will be the future link between State Highway 2 and State Highway 29, along 15th Avenue and Turret Road. Until recently
State Highway 2A was Takitimu Drive.
