The Thames-Coromandel District Council is working towards having one lane of Kennedy Bay Road open by Sunday.
The large dropout approximately 2km from Coromandel Town has been assessed by engineering and contractor staff since the heavy rains lashed the peninsula on April 17.

Council says those contractors have been working every day since the road closed to try and get it open as soon as possible.
“This will depend on the rock structure found as we continue excavating the road embankment. We will be able to provide an update on this on Thursday.”
The site was surveyed last Friday and options for the full repairs will be worked through over the coming weeks. A preferred long-term solution is unlikely to be completed for some months.
Council says in the meantime they’re working as fast as they can to open the road to at least one lane access by the end of the week.
“We would like to thank the Kennedy Bay and Tuateawa communities affected by this road closure for their patience while we restore access.”
With the exception of Kennedy Bay Road, all council roads north of Coromandel were reopened last Thursday.
